PARKING - Unfortunately this year due to the venue move there is NO free parking around the College.
There are quite a few pay carparks surrounding the College but we are advising any Delegate that has taken a car and has booked in one of the cheaper hotels that have free parking (Travelodge, Thistle, Premier Inn, Express Inn) to leave their cars at the hotel and utilise the local bus services.
Also as there are after Festival parties and we don't want anyone having to worry about whether or not they have to drive back to their Hotels. As we are in the centre of the town local taxis are much easier to get to, a list will be made available at the Festival.
From London/Oxford via A40
Depending on where you are based in London the best thing is to head west towards A40/Westway.
- Once on the A40/Westway head along Western Avenue past Shepherds Bush, Perivale and Northholt.
- After Northolt the A40 soon becomes the M40.
- Continue on the M40 until you come to Junction 8.
- Take the sliproad following the A40 signs.
- As you get closer to Oxford you will come to a set of traffic lights, pass through them.
- You will then come to a large complicated looking roundabout. (it's one of those with a road straight through the centre of it as well as being a roundabout)
- Take the third exit, signposted A40/Cheltenham.
- Continue alone this road until you come to another roundabout which you go straight over, signposted A40/Cheltenham.
- A few hundred yards later you will come to another roundabout, signposted A40/Cheltenham.
- Now stay on the A40 for about 42 miles. (you will pass a bypass and a few roundabouts that you go straight over)
- After the small dual carriageway you will come to a slip road and traffic lights which you pass straight over.
- As you come into Cheltenham you will come in on the A40/London Road.
- You will eventually come to a junction that has a Church on the left.
- Pass through the junction staying on the right.
- After a few hundred yards there is a turning to the left, Sandford Mill Road.
- Continue round to the right and at the junction turn left on to Old Bath Road.
- You will immediately come to a roundabout, take the second left onto Sandford Road.
- At the next cross Junction turn right onto Bath Road and IMMEDIATELY turn left onto Montpellier Terrace.
- The next roundabout is a long one, go straight over take the fourth exit, Parabola Road. (follow the road round until you almost double back on yourself)
- At the next smaller roundabout, Hotel Kandinsky is opposite you, take the second left onto Bayshill Road.
- Drive along until you come to a Pedstrian Crossing and The Cheltenham Ladies' College is on your right.
From Slough/Reading/Swindon/Cirencester/Home Counties/M4
- Take the M4 to Swindon.
- Exit at junction 15 then follow the A419/417 all the way to the roundabout which has the Air Balloon Inn on the left.
- At this roundabout we recommend that you take the most direct road which is via Leckhampton (B4070).
- Take the second exit off the roundabout (B436 Stow) and then turn immediately left.
- Follow this road all the way down Leckhamptom Hill and into Leckhampton.
- Go straight over at the next roundabout, taking signs for the Town Centre on the Bath Road .
- Go straight on through the next two sets of traffic lights (you will see Cheltenham College , on the right between these lights) and at the third set turn left into Montpellier Terrace.
- Continue to the roundabout at the end, and turn right to go down Montpellier Walk to The Promenade, (you will see the municipal gardens on your right).
- Continue down past the Queen's Hotel on the right.
- At the next set of traffic lights be in the left hand lane and turn left into St George's Road .
- Ignore the traffic bearing right, keep to the left and continue straight ahead at the first lights approximately 50 metres along St George's Road , to the next traffic lights and crossroads.
- You will see some of the College buildings on your left, just before the traffic lights - the Porter's Lodge has two large, wooden doors built into an archway on the left, a few yards before the lights.
- Turn left at these lights into Bayshill Road and the modern College Main Entrance will be seen about 50 metres on the left with some steps leading up to the reception area.
From the North or South West
- Take the M5 and leave at junction 11.
- Follow the signs to Cheltenham Town Centre along the A40, Gloucester Road and then Lansdown Road , arriving at the roundabout at the top of the Promenade which you should continue down.
- You will see the municipal gardens on your right.
- Continue down past the Queen's Hotel on the right.
- At the next set of traffic lights be in the left hand lane and turn left into St George's Road.
- Ignore the traffic bearing right, keep to the left and continue straight ahead at the first lights approximately 50 metres along St George's Road, to the next traffic lights and crossroads.
By Coach
A number of the main bus/coach services include Cheltenham on their itinerary. The coach station is very close to the main College buildings, in Royal Well Road. This lies just off St.George’s Road and the junction with Bayshill Road. The College Main Entrance is about 50 metres up Bayshill Road, on the left with some steps leading up to the reception area.
By Rail
The local station is known as Cheltenham Spa. Trains connect to most parts of the United Kingdom. Taxis are generally available at the Railway Station and the College is approximately 5 minutes from the station by taxi. Train Times -
Due to a blockade that is planned for the week of 24/10/09 for several days by First Great Western there are no direct trains to Cheltenham Spa from London, instead all trains will come via a change at Bristol (either Parkway or Temple Meads).
Here are the rail time tables, as from The Trainline website and are correct as at 17/09/09. There are direct trains but they are few and far between. We advise that you check your travel before you book, these times could change.
Note: There are trains that travel to Swindon but there is a replacement bus service connecting Swindon to Gloucester, these trains and times are NOT included in this timetable...
By Air
All the following airports have car hire facilities available. Approximate distances from these airports are as follows:
- London Heathrow 90 miles: Route M4-A419-A417
- London Gatwick 130 Miles: Route M23-M25-M4-A419-A417
- Bristol 60 Miles: Route A38-A4-M5
- Manchester 110 Miles: Route M56-M6-M5
- Birmingham 60 Miles: Route M42-M5
Park and Ride
We reccommend that you don't drive all the way into Cheltenham, so a useful option is the park and ride. There are two main sites:
Arle Court, service 511 (Car park - GL51 6SY)
The timetable is available here. This service runs every ten minutes from the west side of town, and the car park is signposted from junction 11 of the M5.
Cheltenham Race Course, service D (Car park at the racecourse)
The timetable is available here. Again, this service runs every ten minutes, and also stops at the Railway Station Forecourt. It is located to the north of the town and available from junction 10.
